Proposal for RUSTICA Bursaries 2008

Background:

Rustica has funding of $4000 per annum to give to students who are undergoing a rural placement within Australia or who are participating in a Conference of National Significance (CoNS). The aim of this funding is to provide students with an insight into some of the issues involved with rural and indigenous health and to encourage them to work in these areas once they have completed their degree. Many students are unable to undertake such placements or attend conferences without significant financial burden. Rustica aims to provide support for these students financially.

Requirements:

These students are required to be health science students studying at the University of Tasmania and they need to be full financial members of Rustica. The placement that they undertake must be in a proven rural area within Australia . Conferences must be Conferences of National Significance, or must have defined rural themes within the conference. Upon return, the student is required to make a presentation to Rustica members, write a report of 500-1500 words describing and discussing their experiences.

Bursaries:

The total value of the bursaries for $4000 per annum. This amount will be split up to allow more members to have access to financial support. The amount of each bursary allocated will depend on the cost and rurality of the placement or conference (ie a more expensive placement or conference with a large focus on rural issues, will attract greater funding than a cheaper, less rurally focused placement or conference). Applications for the bursaries may be made prospectively or retrospectively (i.e. placements/conferences occurring between 30 April 2007 and 30 April 2009 will be eligible for funding through the 2008 bursary).

Allocations of the Bursaries:

The bursaries will be allocated by the Rustica Executive and the Committee for the given year upon written application for the bursaries (see Appendix 1). The application form must include details of the placement or conference, quotes for airfares, registration etc, what the applicant aims to gain from the experience, how they have been involved with Rustica previously, and what they will contribute in the future. All applications must be completed and sent to Rustica ( Clinical School , 43 Collins St , Hobart ) by 30 April each year. The committee must make a final decision and notify applicants as soon as possible. The applicant must provide all receipts and written reports within one month of return from the placement or conference. The dates for the oral presentation should be negotiated with Rustica upon return.

Past Bursary Reports

Make sure you read the reports from students who have recently received a Rustica Bursary. Hopefully they will inspire you to apply!
